Umeed

Umeed is a social enterprise that promotes women empowerment and radically alters the mindsets that exist within the society. The founders GauriMahendra and UditaChadha established Umeed with an ultimate objective of ‘empowering women both socially and economically’. During their stint at Teach India Program, they discovered that the difficult living conditions of their students were having a detrimental effect on their education and they are being forced into child labor. This made them look for the solution to this burning problem. The results of their research suggested that the weaker role of the mother in the family is the root cause of this problem and they live in oppressive circumstances with no decision making power. This became Umeed’s goal to solve this burning issue.

Intend:Umeed creates an income source for women of low-income communities and supports them in achieving dignity, respect, and empowerment. They provide these women with training in eco-friendly newspaper handicraft and helps them in selling it.

Idea:Umeed’s objective is to instill habits of earning, saving, and budgeting in beneficiaries women. To achieve this, Umeed’s team provides proper training in skill development and soft skills like leadership, administration, and more.

Impact: More than 30 women are now working for Umeed and most of them come for the training sessions. They take the raw material for the products from Umeed at their home and bring back the finished products made with the raw material back within a week. After undergoing stringent quality checks, these products are sent for sale. Other than handicrafts, women also make decorative items for festivals like Diwali, Christmas, etc. According to Umeed, on an average each woman earns up to Rs 3,000 – 5,000 depending on the demand of their products. Umeed is looking forward to exploring a new path towards working with more and more women and creating leadership at the grassroots.

BVIC’s Intervention:Umeed was running its pilot when it became part of SOCENT. BVIC supported Umeed through its intense mentoring and seed fund. BVIC’s team provided them with much-needed support in the areas of marketing strategy, product development and marketing, price, designing an approach to reach out to beneficiaries, and training programs.
